If you’re a writer, you might want to enter the Writers Contest at the Seventh Annual Readers Festival, scheduled for October 20 at Mesa State College in Grand Junction.
The contest has three categories: short story (5,000 word limit), creative non-fiction (also 5,000 words), and poetry. First-place winners will receive $100 apiece, and the top three in each category will receive free tickets to the festival.
There’s an entry fee of $10, and the usual manuscript rules apply (typed double-spaced, etc.). The deadline is Sept. 1. A form is required — Colorado Central has a few — and you get forms or more information from Frances Crowell at 970-243-6245, 2246 Tiffany Dr., Grand Junction CO 81503.
The Readers Festival features Colorado authors talking about their work; our own Ed Quillen spoke there in 2005. This year, Aaron Abeyta of Antonito, an occasional contributor to these pages, will be the featured poet. Other writers include Mary Peace Finley, children’s literature; Lesley Poling-Kempes, history; Alex Marcoux, mystery; and James Van Pelt, science fiction. The festival costs $50, and includes lunch and a chance to chat with the writers.
