Water – June 2002 – Colorado Central Magazine
There may not be much water in the Arkansas River this year, but there will still be plenty to discuss at the annual Arkansas River Basin Water Forum, scheduled for June 6-8 at the National Mining Museum and Hall of Fame in Leadville.
Featured speakers include the judge who presides over the highest court in the United States (Neil Reynolds of Leadville), as well as Ed Marston, publisher of High Country News, and Peter Nichols, author of Water and Growth in Colorado. Gov. Bill Owens and Greg Walcher, director of Colorado Natural Resources, have also been invited.
Most of the forum will consist of workshops, and in keeping with the theme (“Peaks to Prairies: Sharing a Watershed”) will cover the river from headwaters (like the California Gulch Superfund site) to the plains (Aurora’s purchase of agricultural water in the Rocky Ford area). Topics will include irrigation, diversions, water quality, fishing, rafting, etc.
Registration is $50, payable to Arkansas River Basin Water Forum, 411 N 10th St., Rocky Ford CO 81067-0910. For information, call Charles or Becky Goff at 719-942-4688. There should also be some information at www.uawc.org.
