Over the years, breweries have faced a multitude of onslaughts: the temperance movement, prohibition, consolidation, and globalization. The Walter Brewing Company is one that did not make it. Johannes Walter, a German immigrant, founded Walter’s in Spencer, WI in 1874.
Eventually, Walter’s opened four other breweries in Wisconsin and one in Pueblo, CO. By 1970, only two of the original five breweries remained, one in Eau Claire and one in Pueblo. Sadly, the Pueblo brewery closed in 1975. Martin Walter’s home in Pueblo has been converted to the Abriendo Inn Bed & Breakfast.
