Many things that are “good for you” involve a certain amount of displeasure, but trails usually offer pleasant experiences, while improving your health.
Thus the slogan of “Take the path for a healthier you” for this year’s National Trails Day on June 4.
Sponsored by the American Hiking Society along with various federal agencies and outdoor-industry groups, it has been celebrated since 1993 – but not around here.
That’s supposed to change this year. The Trailhead in Buena Vista is sponsoring a Trails Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, and it invites volunteer groups, health and fitness advocates, federal and state land managers, and corporate sponsors to participate. The deadline is May 15, according to shop co-owner Keith Baker.
He went on to say that “We want to promote our trails as one of our region’s greatest resources and to encourage their responsible use.” Also, “We want to recognize the vital role volunteers play in trail preservation and maintenance, and help them recruit new members.”
