Poetic Opportunities
April is National Poetry Month (don’t ask us who makes such declarations, because if we knew, we’d ask for a “National Support Your Small Regional Monthly Magazine Month”), and so the Book Mine in Leadville is sponsoring a poetry contest.
There are three age categories: Children (12 and under), Young Adult (13-18), and Adult (19 and up). Each will have a first place ($25 gift certificate) and honorable mention ($10 gift certificate), and the first-place poems will be published in the April 26 edition of the Herald-Democrat.
Deadline is April 16, and you can pick up a copy of the rules (poems need to be submitted in a specific format) at the store, at the newspaper, or at any school or public library in Lake County.
And if you’re looking for another way to have your poetry published, note that Colorado now has an annual literary magazine, with the first edition already out and the second one scheduled for this fall.
It’s called Talking Gourds, and it’s published by Lone Cone Press in Norwood. Art Goodtimes, well-known bard and San Miguel county commissioner, is editor and publisher. “We need a literary magazine that represents the excellent writing going on here in Colorado,” he said, “and to serve as a forum for our widespread literary community.” Talking Gourds differs physically from most magazines: it isn’t bound or stapled — instead, it’s a collection of loose-leaf broadsides.
If you’re interested in submitting material, you should query and get a sample copy, available for $10 postpaid from Lone Cone Press, 92 Lone Cone Road, Norwood CO 81423-0160.
