Local events – September 2002 – Colorado Central Magazine
For the first time in years, Salida will be tasteless this month.
No, this isn’t an issue of aesthetics. It’s an issue of participation, according to Laurie Young at the Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce, which has organized the “Taste of Salida” celebration on a September Saturday since 1999.
At the event, patrons buy tickets, then go around Riverside Park, where local restaurants offer servings of their favorite menu items.
There won’t be one this year, Young said. She wouldn’t give out specific numbers, but said “We need a certain number of restaurants to participate to make this event work, and we didn’t have enough interested restaurants this year.”
However, “we’ll try again next year,” she said.
This can’t have been a good year for local restaurants, since 2002 hasn’t been a good year for tourism, what with post-911 jitters, a depressed national economy, a drought to discourage floaters and anglers, and forest fires on the national news.
