New Land Trust looking for members
The new Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas is holding a membership drive.
What does it do? Local land trusts are set up to acquire and manage conservation easements, which are essentially the development rights, on rural real estate. The idea is that the land can stay in agricultural production, or as open space or the like.
There are other land trusts nearby — among them the Gunnison Ranchland Conservation Legacy, the Crestone/Baca Land Trust, and the San Isabel Foundation — but they don’t serve Lake, Chaffee, and Frémont counties, which will be the operating area of the Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas.
According to the LTUA website (www.ltua.org), the group’s goal “is to help landowners preserve, protect, and, in some cases, retain their land and way of life.”
Annual memberships range from $10 for students and $25 for individuals to $150 (more is welcome, of course) for benefactors. For more information, check out their website or call Butch Butler of Buena Vista at 719-395-8059.
