If all goes well, Salidans should have another radio station in January — KHEN-LP at 106.9 FM.
It’s a low-power community radio station. The Federal Communications Commission in Washington granted a construction permit on Jan. 11, and the organizers must build a studio and install a transmitter before getting a license. The goal is to get on the air early in 2003.
Even though this is a non-commercial endeavor, it still takes money — about $10,000. Two fund-raisers in February and May have brought in about $1,400, and another — with seven bands — is planned for July 5 in Smeltertown. Also, charter memberships are available, ranging from the $75 Charter Egg to the $250 Charter Hen, and donors of $50 or more get free T-shirts.
Volunteers are also welcome, according to Jane Carpenter, one of the organizers — this is a good time “to learn radio from the ground up.” And there’s more: “Possibilities include submitting ideas for a program you’d like to host (training provided), grant-writing, production, engineering, internship, youth programming, fund-raising, event planning, and office support.”
If you’re interested, you can find more in the brochures that are all over town, which also include a questionnaire about what you’d like to hear. You can also write to Tenderfoot Transmitting, P.O. Box 596, Salida CO 81201; email to tendertrans@yahoo.com; or leave a phone message at 719-539-7740.
