Media – February 2003 – Colorado Central Magazine
By the time this magazine arrives, Salida’s new community radio station, KHEN, will likely be on the air, although the schedule will be somewhat sporadic at first.
KHEN is an FM station broadcasting at 106.9 mHz and 100 watts, a signal that should reach Poncha Springs and Buena Vista.
As we went to press, the station’s movers and shakers were busy finishing the studio, scheduling and training volunteers, installing and testing electronic equipment, and otherwise preparing to start broadcasting. Current plans are for some testing, followed by scheduled programming from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., starting on Feb. 1.
That will also be the day of an open house at the station’s quarters at 124 E. Third St. This place is hard to find from Third Street, though; so look in the alley behind Salida Trading Co. Those interested in more information, or in free radio classes, should call the station at 719-539-1069.
In other Salida radio news, KVRH-AM, 1340 kHz, is no longer “The River” with a talk and news format. On Jan. 1, it switched to oldies music format. That’s similar to the classic rock format at Salida’s KSBV-FM, 93.7 mHz.
Those are far from being the only stations that serve the area, and that’s sure a change from when we moved to Salida 25 years ago. Then, KVRH-AM was just about the only show in town, although it did broadcast in FM, too.
