KHEN gets a home as fund-raising continues

Salida’s proposed community radio station moved closer to getting on the air after a successful fund-raiser on July 5, when seven local bands donated their talents to “Smelterstock.”

As the name indicates, it was supposed to be held in Smeltertown. But the venue was outdoors, and with the extreme danger of wildfires, they moved it to the Steam Plant in downtown Salida, and raised $2,800.

KHEN, which will broadcast at 106.9 FM, now has a home — a 900-square-foot room behind the Sunshine Market, and its antenna will go atop a downtown building owned by Dick and Helen Leavitt.

Much remains to be done, from installing soundproof walls in the studio to raising $10,000 for the transmitter and broadcast equipment, with the goal of getting on the air by January.
