Climate – November 1995 – Colorado Central Magazine
As we went to press, the days were clear and warm, and if history is any guide, then this winter should be among the warmest on record.
Why?
Leadville built its famous Ice Palace in 1896, and the Crystal Carnival Association plans to repeat the feat a century later, with some changes.
Since the old location has houses now, the new palace will sit on the old rodeo grounds, and it will only be one-third as large as the original.
The original, designed to attract tourists, melted in a March heat wave and lost money. The replica, also designed to attract visitors, will cost about $1 million — and we’ll have to see about the weather.
