Letter from Kate Donithorne
World Politics – April 2005 – Colorado Central Magazine
Editors:
I got quite a chuckle out of the March Colorado Central report from Leadville, about the fellow who claimed to be Amish and so “not subject to building codes.” He should get some sort of prize for creativity as he pays his fines.
Just in case any readers think there’s a grain of truth in that, though, let me point out that the good folks in our Amish community south of Monte Vista are quite scrupulous about following Rio Grande County codes. As a result, they have a cordial relationship with our county commissioners (who’ve also had slow-buggy signs set along several roads in that neighborhood). In my work, I’ve enjoyed getting to know a few of those families.
I suppose that won’t bolster the poor Lake County fellow’s case. Oh, well.
