Salida downtown – September 1995 – Colorado Central Magazine
Salida may have found a cure for downtown parking woes, which recently occupied a city council meeting as one merchant announced that he had videotaped a neighbor who was just moving his car to the next spot every two hours, thereby meeting the letter of the law.
The solution? On a Friday afternoon, city crews began work on one block of First Street — that is, the barricades went up then, although no observable work occurred until Monday.
Rather than detour through traffic just around this block for the weekend, the city sent traffic for about two miles on Third Street, thereby insuring that tourists had to work at it if they wanted to reach Historic Downtown Salida.
The result? Lots of parking downtown. The cynical might have seen this as mere ineptitude, but let’s give credit where credit is due.
