Four young men, now in their 20s and 30s, have filed suit in federal court charging that Salida and Chaffee County officials violated their civil rights.
All were once members of Explorer Post 2070, which was led by Gary Danhauer, who was also youth pastor at the First Baptist Church at the time.
They allege that they were sexually abused by Danhauer, and that when they reported this to local authorities, the authorities did not investigate the allegations, and further, the boys were discouraged from pursuing this on their own as each was told that there were no other complaints.
Named in the suit were many present officials, as well as former Salida Police Chief Leonard Post and former Chaffee Undersheriff Dave Bowers. No court date has been set.
