History – October 2004 – Colorado Central Magazine
Buena Vista has been actively celebrating its quarquicentennial this year, with something happening almost every night to honor the town’s 125th birthday.
Special events in October include evening lectures during Heritage Week, which runs Oct. 24-28, and culminates in a Founders Day costume ball on Oct. 29.
Meanwhile, Buena Vista Heritage is considering some modifications to the museum to better reflect the community, and that has inspired an essay contest to find out “What makes Buena Vista a special place?”
The essay contest is open to all ages, with prizes in four categories: children 9 and under, youth 10-14, teens 15-18, and adults from 19 and older. Essays should be no longer than five double-spaced pages (that’s about 1,000 words), and there is no minimum length. Submission deadline is Oct. 15.
Entry forms are available at the museum (719-395-8548), or from the society at P.O. Box 1414, Buena Vista CO 81212.
The essays should answer questions like “Why did your family move here, why do you stay, and what’s important to you here? Why do you think Buena Vista lasted 125 years?” according to Cara Russell, executive director for BV Heritage.
Those are pretty good questions to ponder, no matter where you live or how long the place has been on the map.
