Immigration – September 2006 – Colorado Central Magazine
The author, Nancy Hiemstra, lived in Leadville from 2001-2003 before moving to Eugene, Oregon, for graduate school. This article is based on her master’s thesis in Cultural Geography.
Most of Nancy’s research in Lake County was done in the summer of 2004, and she has been back to visit and update information in the two summers since then. Nancy translated interviews done in Spanish to English. Also, due to university research requirements which promised anonymity to interviewees, personal names included in this article are pseudonyms. Nancy has two pieces on Leadville coming out in academic publications in the coming year, but found it much more fun to write for Colorado Central Magazine.
She is currently in the Cultural Geography PhD program at Syracuse University, focusing on immigration, new immigrant destinations, and citizenship.
