Letter from Jeff Lee
Montane literature – January 2003 – Colorado Central Magazine
Dear Martha & Ed,
What a terrific surprise to turn the pages of the new [December] Colorado Central and find the “Books to Match our Mountains” survey. Thanks so much for spreading the word for these important books. Your article was laid out so well, and I particularly enjoyed the additional titles you included — there were a few I need to add to the Land Library’s shelves!
I want this to be a quick note of thanks to you both, but at the same time I’d like to let you know more about the Rocky Mountain Land Library. Simply put, using the seed of an existing 10,000-volume natural history book collection, the Land Library hopes to establish a residential study center devoted to land studies. While residential, we also hope that the Land Library can serve as a vital community resource. We have the books, and our first educational outreach program (the Rocky Mountain Land Series) is underway — we just lack the place to put down our roots to begin our daily work.
Following a year of “site selection” meetings around the state, Land Library advisor Susan Tweit recommended that we consider Salida as a future home for the Library. We have, and Salida has quickly moved to the top of our list.
My short note is growing. I will send you a brief description of the Land Library project in the next few days. I’d really like for both of you to know what we are working on, and I would especially value any thoughts or insights you might have.
Thanks again for the December issue, and the great ongoing work of Colorado Central!
All the best,
Jeff Lee
