Family Seeking Help for Son With Rare Disease
An Alamosa boy who developed a rare skin condition three years ago is still fighting a battle with the disease.
10-year-old Jaiden Rogers suffers from so-called stiff-skin syndrome, which covers much of his body in rock-like lesions. The syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that leads to lesions with increased fibrotic tissue that can cause a hard or “rock-like” appearance.
Students at Del Norte High School raised more than $1,500 to help Rogers get a service dog.
None of the treatments Rogers has received have been effective against the disease, and his family is reaching out to help raise funds for his treatment at:

Injured Owl Discovered Near Alamosa
A great horned owl, which suffered a broken leg and wing after supposedly being hit by a car just east of Alamosa, was taken in on Feb. 14 by a Colorado State Patrol trooper and Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officer.
Unfortunately, the owl was too badly injured and had to be euthanized, according to Joe Lewandowski with CPW.
Company Withdraws Application
After overwhelming public opposition, a company that had planned to build a liquid sodium cyanide terminal at a railroad yard near Blanca has withdrawn its application.
Cyanco, an international mining company, planned to ship the chemicals by rail to a site just outside the town of Blanca, where they would be transferred to tankers and trucked to mines in Cripple Creek and Victor.

Drone On
Alamosa County commissioners have applied to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the use of drones to assist in firefighting, search and rescue, and agricultural inspections.
Use of the drones requires federal approval under new drone laws. Drones are required to be visible to operators and to follow FAA flight rules.
More Exposure for Hunger
Hunger Through My Lens, a Colorado-based project that uses photography to spotlight the realities of hunger, has expanded to the San Luis Valley and is working with La Puente, a group that assists homeless people and other community members in the Valley.
Rioter Convicted
A Saguache County jail inmate was convicted by a jury of inciting a riot, arson, assault and criminal mischief. Dickie Lopez started a fire in the jail, which caused the evacuation of eight inmates and more than $30,000 in damages on May 27, 2015.
School Board Attends Rally
Board members from the Moffat Consolidated School District, along with Superintendent Kirk Banghart, rallied at the Capitol building in Denver on Jan. 11 for restoration of funding of public schools.
The rally, held two days before the start of the 2016 state legislative session, was held to ask lawmakers to restore some of the $5 billion withheld from Colorado school funding since 2010, according to The Crestone Eagle.
