Rockslide! By Mike Rosso on March 3, 2011 One of the biggest news stories in Central Colorado this past month was a rockslide that occurred on Valentine’s Day on U.S. Hwy. 50 between Cotopaxi and Coaldale at mile post 244. It closed the highway to traffic in both directions until all the debris was removed late Sunday, Feb. 20. Several of the boulders weighed as much as 60 tons each according to the Colorado Department of Transporation. The slide also cut off electric service to about 1,200 residents but was restored within 14 hours. During cleanup traffic was diverted via Hartzel and Johnson Village. Photo by Andrew Koransky.
