The 25th Headwaters Conference will begin Friday, Sept. 18 at Western State in Gunnison. The theme this year is The Working Wild with Pulitzer Prize author, Gary Snyder, providing the keynote address on Friday at 7. Saturday morning will have two expert panels discussing The Urban Wild and the The Private Wild, followed by tours to area projects. The afternoon session will feature a panel discussing The Common Wild and end with a reading by Headwaters Founder and Cozine contributor, George Sibley.
Headwaters Director and Director of Western’s new Master’s in Environmental Management (MEM), John Hausdoerffer, said, “This year’s Headwaters Conference… will explore the intersection of wilderness, working landscapes and environmental-justice perspective.” This is the first Conference since the inception of Western’s new MEM and will reflect the two tracks of the graduate program, integrated land management (ILM) and sustainable and resilient communities (SRC).
Guest readers featured at the Conference will include Sean Prentiss reading from his book, “Finding Abbey,” and Aaron Abeyta reading his “Letter from the Headwaters.” This year’s conference will seek to close “the political, philosophical and geographical gap between work and the wild,” for Headwaters communities.
